Trick or Treat!

I have come to realize that many of the things we do with Silas are adventures to him. My Mom made us a book of his 1-year pictures entitled "The Adventures of Silas" and I realize now how fitting that title is. The pumpkin patches, trick-or-treating for the first time, going to The Great Pumpkin Party at church for the first time, wearing his Lion costume (okay, this isn't the first time for the costume...it's the same one from last year but this year he's really gotten into character), going on hikes as a family...all these things we consider normal are big adventures to Silas.

He took great joy this year in wearing his Lion costume. Silas refuses to leave hats on so when he left his Lion hat on at The Great Pumpkin Party and for trick-or-treating, we were genuinely surprised and pleased! It was absolutely precious to watch him go up to our neighbor's houses, pick out a piece (or 2) or candy and then say, "Thank you!" What joy it brings to a mother's heart to hear her child use manners, even sometimes unprompted. We only made it to a few houses - Silas really wanted to eat every piece of candy he got but he and Daddy had a fun time passing out candy at home too.

We took Silas on a hike through the woods yesterday in the backpack, which have hardly used. He wasn't really thrilled with it at first until we made a game of Mommy chasing Daddy and Silas and then he squeeled with delight. We walked for over an hour and Silas and Jake skipped rocks into the river. I got some darling pictures of Silas playing in the leaves. We kept trying to get him to walk with us and finally realized we weren't in any rush to get home so we just took our sweet time and let Silas run, throw leaves and discover nature. We had a great time - I wish we had a few more months of this nice weather to enjoy so we could do more nature walks and let him discover the great outdoors.

Last weekend we did family pictures out at Water Works Park. Hmmmm. Let's just say next time we'll be better prepared and have someone tag along to entertain Silas and make him smile. He did very well considering he ended up being sick and had a fever or 103.8 when we got home. :-/ Ugh, I know! I felt like a terrible Mom!! Anyway, we got a few good ones...not many with all three of us smiling, but that's okay.
